You’re the opposite of peas.

When I was little,
Oh, I’d say about three,
my mother made us dinner
and told me to eat my peas.

I explained to her that
I did not want my peas.

“I won’t like them,” I said.
“You don’t know until you’ve tried,”
She said back.

“I disagree.  I know that I will not like them,”
I told her.
“And so I don’t understand
why I would eat them,
if I know I won’t like them.”
But she didn’t see my point.

“Eat your peas,” she demanded.

I flicked one off my plate;
My cat chased it down the stairs.
She frowned.

“Eat-your-PEAS,” She boomed.

I mashed them into green paste.
She pointed sternly at my plate,
But said nothing.

“Will it make you happy if I eat them
just to show you that I do not like them?”

“Yes,” she said.

I scooped up a spoonful;
Pinched my nose
for effect.
I put them in my mouth,
and swallowed.
Then I gagged.

I did not like my peas.
I knew that I would not
before ever having tried them.

You’re not like these peas.
You don’t smell;
You do not roll about my plate indecisively.
You do not make me
want to go to bed hungry.

You’re the opposite of peas.
