Issue 12: Synchronicity
Send submissions to: "submissions

Submissions due
August 31, 2003
We accept writing submissions of
a maximum of 1500 words. Select your best writing
submission and send us only one per issue, please.
Synchronicity is defined as "the coincidental occurrence of events that seem related but are not explained by conventional mechanisms of causality."
We want to know how synchronicity has shown up in your life. How many times has something unexpected happened to you? Maybe you thought about something first thing in the morning and it actually occurred later in the day?
Synchronicities can be big or little - as simple as running into a person you were just thinking about, even though you haven't seen her in a few months. Or synchronicity can be more complicated, such as a chain of events like a flat tire that lead to a missed plane that turned out well because you avoided the worst snowstorm on record at your destination.
Please share with us your marvelous moments of serendipity in 1500 words or less. What wonderful, bizarre happenstances found a way into your life's path and forever changed it? What are the signs you know for sure MUST have come straight from the Angels? What strange coincidences helped you to make a difficult decision? Or what fun, silly, goofy things have you and your friends both come up with at the same time?
Write your stories of synchronicity and send them to us, you never know where it might lead. |

Does
a hint of danger send you scurrying under your bed, or
are you bored to tears without a trace of danger?
Do you laugh in the face of danger? Describe
your relationship with fear and danger and adventure.
How high is your tolerance for danger? Are your
internal sensors set so high that jumping out of an
airplane is something to do just for fun, and your ideal
lifestyle would be likened to Indiana Jones? Or
are your danger sensors set low, so that the tiniest
hint of danger sends you running in terror and you need
to wear a helmet while watching football on TV?
What sends up red flags for you? When do you feel
like you're in the most danger? Do you feel
danger when traveling into uncharted territory? Is
it dangerous to speak your mind, or more dangerous to
keep your mouth shut? Write about your personal
experiences with danger, even if the most dangerous
thing you can think of is writing something for Be Real
Magazine! Live dangerously and send it to
us! We also would love to see some dangerous
artwork and risk-taking photography.

Close
you eyes, take a breath, and think about Home.
Do you see a crackling fire in the fireplace, smell
baking bread, and hear quiet birds chirping? Or do
you see toddlers with chocolate smeared faces screaming
and running up to you to give you a loving kiss?
Do your pets make you feel more at home than your
family? Describe how home is both a tangible place
and also a state of mind. Is home merely a
memory from the past, or the reality you're living now?
Is home a place where people come and go freely, or is
it closely guarded by watchdogs and surrounded by a
moat? When you stop and think about home, do you
think of the city where you were born and grew up, or do
you think of where you live now? Is home your
personal sanctuary from the rest of the world or is it
just a place to stash your clothes while you're rushing
everywhere else? Write about what home means to
you. Share a memory of home, what makes home
"home" to you, or how you imagine your ideal
home, then send it to us to get a chance at being
published. Remember, we also want artwork!
Paint or photograph your impression of what home means
to you, scan it, and submit it to us.

We
are constantly in transition. There are big, obvious
transitions like beginning or ending relationships,
switching from an old job to a new job, or moving to a
new house. Then there are subtle transitions between
seasons as the days grow longer or shorter and leaves
grow or change color and fall from trees. There
are also gobs of miniature transitions that happen daily
– including small shifts we make in our lifestyles to
increase energy and feel better or seeing our
friendships expand and deepen. What transitions
have had the most profound impact on you? What
transitions are you in the middle of? Reflect on
the myriad of transitions happening to you and around
you, write your poems and stories; take your pictures;
create your artwork and send them our way.
